Nearly all websites are created for a purpose. This can be for anything from making money or indexing the entire internet, to displaying large numbers of pictures of cats for some reason. Any website you will build will have goals and even the biggest of sites can be summarised easily. Ideally you can describe what your site is about in one simple sentence:
- “To provide a global trading platform where practically anyone can trade practically anything.” – eBay
- “To build a place where people can come to find and discover anything they might want to buy online.” – Amazon
- “Organise the world’s information and make it universally accessible and useful.” – Google
The answer to this question is essentially your “mission statement” and will help you to maintain focus throughout the process of making your website. Keeping this in mind is often useful if you have to produce a strap-line: a short slogan that enhances the site brand.
The site we are creating here for Mr. Orange has the purpose of being a showcase for our character. In fact characters are used in websites quite frequently to help give websites a friendly and inviting appearance and to help draw in the visitors. With this in mind, our site is going to be a portfolio for Mr Orange to show his versatility and to try to find him employment as a salesman across the internet.
To sum up…
Purpose of the website: A showcase for our character Mr. Orange
Strap line: Everything looks better with Mr Orange
